Sometimes here in Las Vegas, we go through a drought. It is not always caused by our weather. At times the drought is lack of art, most notably touring jazz acts. Beware this March and April, the dry spell will be over. So get ready to check out some great musicians in your own backyard.

This great run gets underway on March 5th at The Suncoast with three nights of Sergio Mendes and Brazil 2004. Last year's stop was one of the highlights on the jazz scene for me. The Suncoast will also have Chuck Mangione on March 20th & 21st and George Shearing on March 27th & 28th, which was another highlight last year for me. On April 9th & 10th, Bob James will have a turn. Then Chris Botti comes to the Suncoast on April 23rd & 24th.

Brian Culbertson promotional photo Not wanting to be left out, UNLV is bringing the Newport Jazz Festival 50th Anniversary Tour to Artemus Ham Hall on March 12th. This show will feature James Carter, Terence Blanchard, Ken Peplowski and many other talented musicians.

Last but not least, Desert Breeze Park is bringing in The 11th Annual Las Vegas City Of Lights Jazz Festival. This will be another great festival featuring BWB, who are Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown. BWB recorded the funky and soulful Groovin' CD in 2002. Brian Culbertson, fresh off 2003's COME ON UP, will also be featured. This show will include many other top notch artists. These two months will go a long way in giving a great fix. Catch jazz this spring either in small intimate rooms, like Ham Hall and The Showroom at the Suncoast, or outside at the beautiful Desert Breeze Park. Or better yet, catch them all.
