Gov't Mule's remaining members returned to the House Of Blues featuring Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Matt Abts drums, Chuck Leavell - who has played with the Rolling Stones - on keyboards, and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools.
They opened the evening with "Bad Little Doggie" and by the time it was over the house was rocking. Next up was "Lay Your Burden Down" which was even better. And when Warren Haynes started playing slide guitar on "Out Of The Rain" the crowd was clearly in their command.
Gov't Mule also played two interesting covers - "What Is Hip" by Tower Of Power and Humble Pie's "Thirty Days In The Hole." Also rendered was a good blues instrumental "32/20 Blues."
"Falling Down" was the last song of the night. It included a Jimi Hendrix "Third Stone From The Sun" tease along with lines from the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood." The band then came back for a lengthy one song encore of "Soul Shine" which proved that the show was a huge success from the fans' point of view.
By the end of the evening the only question remaining was who would be Gov't Mule's full time bass player. Thanks go out to Kelly and Dana from the House Of Blues, and local radio personality George Lyons. Listen to George's program The Lyons Den on KUNV Jazz 91.5 late Sunday nights.
