Dave Matthews Band: Everyday

I had not seen the Dave Matthews Band previously. I like their music and wanted to experience what they were about live. And what I discovered was that they are an eclectic, energetic, everyday band. "Everyday" here does not mean common. It means they are a hardworking unit that puts all they have into every performance. Like the Rolling Stones before them, they may just be the world's greatest rock and roll band, and then some.

Initially, I was surprised to see how much of a jazz influenced show it turned out to be. Later in the set I realized what a true jamband this group is. Leroi Moore played a saxophone that Clarence Clemens, of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and jazz great David Sandborn would be proud of. And fine violinist Boyd Tinsley showed his vocal talent while singing lead on "True Reflections". The band played a twenty song set lasting two and a half hours that was well worth the money.

Selections included six songs from their current release Everyday - among them "Angel" and their new single "The Space Between" and "I Did It". Bass player Stefen Lessard and drummer Carter Beauford played jazz riffs as easily as rock and roll. Along with the band, Dave Matthews sang and played his heart out. When the Dave Matthews Band come around again, be sure not to miss them. And be prepared to expect the unexpected from this talented quintet.

A special thanks goes out to Rod Ferguson of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada who helped me with the song titles. He and his three friends drove twenty-four hours straight to see the Dave Matthews Band perform both nights in Las Vegas.

Editor's Note: Dave Matthews has consistently embraced his jazz influences. Recently the group added a May 4 stop in Memphis, TN at the Beale Street Music Festival, which will precede the group's previously announced May 5 stop in New Orleans for that city's annual Jazz and Heritage Festival.
