The Jazz Las Vegas Jazz Events Calendar

Jazz bassist Kyle Eastwood performs at the Suncoast Showroom
Friday through Sunday, August 4th – 6th, 2006

Kyle EastwoodKyle’s first memories of music are of jazz. Jazz was the only music he listened to for the first 10 years of his life, thanks to his Dad, actor and Oscar winning director Clint Eastwood’s lifelong appreciation for the genre. Kyle and Clint attended the Monterey Jazz Festival regularly as Kyle was growing up, and there was something magnetic about watching someone play for an audience, even watching Clint play the piano at home, that completely captivated young Kyle.

In late 1986, Kyle realized that music, and more precisely jazz was his true passion. Having dabbled on the electric bass as a teenager, he now also plays the upright, acoustic, and double bass.

Kyle recently released his second album, Paris Blue. Three-quarters of Paris Blue was recorded in apartments across Paris, equipment propped up on chairs, microphones unorthodoxly placed. Big Noise, the first track from Paris Blue, sets the tone for the record with an energetic drumbeat and a repeated whistled melody. It invokes smoky Paris nightclubs in the ‘20’s, while the second track, Marrakech, is immediately contemporary. The juxtaposition of styles, displays Kyle’s comfort with classic as well as contemporary jazz.

This year Kyle will be playing the closing night of the Monterey Jazz Festival, the same festival where he had the opportunity to meet such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Ella Fitzgerald.

Kyle continuously works, notably composing tracks for films such as Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby.

Concert Dates: Fri-Sun, August 4-6 Venue: Suncoast Showroom, Showtime: 7:30 p.m. Tickets: priced from $29.95. Wayman Tisdale, Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler & Brian Simpson

Wayman Tisdale Railhead Lounge, Saturday August 5    In the early '90s, Wayman Tisdale pounded the court as an Olympic Gold medalist in basketball, All-American at the University of Oklahoma and a member of the Phoenix Suns.

Now Tisdale slaps the strings of his bass guitar as he fronts his Fifth Quarter Band.

Taking notes from bass guitar great Stanley Clarke's playbook, Tisdale brings a champion's attitude into the contemporary musical scene. The jazzman's first album, 1995's "Power Forward," was released on Motown subsidiary MoJazz.

Now Tisdale's album roster boasts the releases "Power Forward," "In the Zone," "Decisions," "Face to Face." All of his albums keep it real with a funky take on contemporary jazz.

Kirk Whalum Saxophonist Kirk Whalum started on the road that would lead him to jazz distinction in Memphis, where he played in his father's church choir. Raised on gospel music, R&B and Memphis blues, Whalum received a music scholarship from Texas Southern University in Houston, where he formed his own band, playing original compositions on the Texas club circuit.

After opening for Bob James in Houston one night, Whalum was invited to New York by the pianist to appear on his album "12."

Whalum signed to Columbia shortly thereafter, and released five albums for the label: "Floppy Disk," "And You Know That!," "The Promise," "Cache" and "In This Life" (three of which were produced by Bob James). Next came the Grammy-nominated "Joined At The Hip" with Bob James in 1996.

In 1997, Whalum signed with Warner Brothers and released his solo debut for the label and his sixth solo project, "Colors." The album paid tribute to musical and cultural diversity, a theme reflected in Whalum's association with Hearts Against Racism & Prejudice (H.A.R.P) for which he serves as president.

Next came his "Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter 1" release, which ascended both the gospel and jazz charts, followed by his monster hit "For You," an album that occupied the top of the jazz charts two years after its release.

Whalum has captured three No. 1 album slots on the Billboard Jazz Charts, and has had several albums chart in the Jazz Top 10. His is also the standout sax solo on Whitney Houston's smash hit "I Will Always Love You."

Concert Date: Saturday, August 5 Venue: Railhead Lounge, Showtime: 8:00 p.m. Tickets: $24.95-$42.95. Tickets may be purchased by calling 703-547-5300 for Las Vegas residents or 866-264-1818 for guests outside of the Las Vegas area, and at all Station Casinos Rewards Centers, Fiesta Front Desks and The Galleria Mall. Charles Lloyd: 40 Years of ’Forest Flower’

Charles Lloyd In honor of the 40th anniversary of his groundbreaking hit Forest Flower Charles Lloyd and his acclaimed working quartet-pianist Geri Allen, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland-revisit the classic music at this year's 49th Monterey Jazz Festival on the opening night of the three-day affair, Saturday, September 16 on the Jimmy Lyons Stage in the main arena at the Monterey County Fairgrounds.

Lloyd is capping a momentous year, which featured stunning concerts with his exciting trio Sangam (Lloyd, Harland and Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain) as well as the April release of their critically lauded eponymous CD, Sangam on ECM. The trio debuted at the SF Jazz Festival in 2004 and their sold out show at NYC's Zankel Hall was one of the highlights of this summer's JVC Jazz Festival. Lloyd is often credited with anticipating the World Music movement as far back as the 1950s and has performed and recorded with musicians from around the globe.

Charles Lloyd's final collaboration with his longtime friend and musical co-conspirator, the late, great drum master Billy Higgins is the subject of a new 72 minute film entitled HOME by Lloyd's wife, filmmaker/photographer Dorothy Darr, which documents Lloyd's last recording with Higgins, Which Way is East.

Mosaic Records has also just release Lloyd's second recording, Of Course, Of Course which has been long out-of-print. This elemental session from 1964-65 features Lloyd alongside what was then Miles Davis' stellar rhythm section of Ron Carter and Tony Williams as well as guitarist Gabor Szabo who had recorded four albums with Lloyd as a member of Chico Hamilton's band previous to this date. This is the first cd release of a much neglected masterpiece.

Charles Lloyd has long been one of the most compelling and iconoclastic figures in jazz for the past four+ decades--from his early days in Memphis to playing with Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Billy Higgins and others in Los Angeles in the 1950s. He was principal composer and musical director for Hamilton in the early sixties. In his 60s heyday, he led his own legendary bands that featured the talents of improvising artists Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Cecil McBee, and Szabo among them.

Following his huge success in the mid-late 60s, Lloyd retired in a self-imposed retreat to Big Sur on a spiritual quest that fueled his gradual return in the 1980s as one of the missing links between the avant-garde, world music and the improvised sounds of the last part of the 20th century. Lloyd's use of Eastern modality in his extended compositions as well as his expansive melodic grace have influenced a generation of jazz players. Since 1989 his recordings for ECM have become one of the most treasured catalogs among today's jazz listeners. Charles Lloyd's career was the subject of an extensive cover story in the July 2006 issue of Down Beat.

Greg Osby    CD and artist biography brief:    Symbols of Light (A Solution) (2001)

The strings and sax format has been utilized by a number of jazz greats, from Charlie Parker to Stan Getz and now alto and soprano saxophonist Greg Osby. He's working with a combo featuring the young piano whiz Jason Moran, augmented by a string quartet, which complements the leader's atmospheric and snaky sax lines. The compositions exhibit a beautiful blend of the compositional and improvisational genius of Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, Henry Threadgill, Wayne Shorter, and Muhal Richard Abrams. That blend is heard on the evocative, impressionistic expressions of "M" and the anthemic "Repay in Kind." The standard "Wild Is the Wind" is reborn with a darker harmonic hue. The strings supply Osby's songs with ethereal, classically tinged textured expressions. Osby plays, arranges, and composes with imagination and ingenuity--and the best is yet to come. -- Eugene Holley Jr. :: amazon.com :: editorial review

Charles Lloyd: Forest Flower
A Classic Album Profile

Artist Brief:
Charles Lloyd (March 15, 1938-) is an American jazz musician. Though he primarily plays tenor saxophone and flute, he has also occasionally recorded on alto saxophone and more exotic reed instruments. Lloyd's saxophone playing is often characterized as an individualized, lighter-toned variant of John Coltrane's style. His best known composition is "Forest Flower". -- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Lloyd: Forest FlowerAlbum Notes:
FOREST FLOWER was recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York on September 8, 1966 and live at the Monterey Jazz Festival on September 18, 1966. SOUNDTRACK was recorded live at Town Hall, New York on November 15, 1968. Originally released as 2 separate LPs. Includes liner notes by George Avakian. All songs written by Charles Lloyd except "Sorcery" (Keith Jarrett), "Song Of Her" (Cecil McBee) and "East Of The Sun" (Brooks Bowman). This pair of live albums from 1966 and 1968, respectively, features saxophonist/flautist Charles Lloyd with an outstanding lineup that includes pianist Keith Jarrett. A mix of experimental jazz and more straight-ahead blowing is presented here. For example, "East of the Sun" is an up-tempo scorcher from Lloyd's Monterey performance (on FOREST FLOWER), and this piece purposely self-destructs on each solo before morphing back into a burning bebop groove. The opening track, "Forest Flower - Sunrise," is a frenetic bossa nova tune that will put listeners on the edge of their seats. Jarrett and Lloyd offer up furious solos here, casting this usually delicate Brazilian style in a more hard-edged light. The sound quality on SOUNDTRACK is inferior to FOREST FLOWER, but the performances here are equally stunning. Of these, the ballad "Voice in the Night" is the most engaging. On this tune, the group plays quite rubato, yet they seem to move as one; these musicians certainly understand the importance of band interplay. "Pre-Dawn" is completely avant-garde and is centered on the solo explorations of Lloyd, who squeaks and squawks out a series of complex bebop lines. Overall, This fiery two-for-one CD is one of Lloyd's best early efforts. -- CD Universe

Personnel:
Charles Lloyd (tenor saxophone, flute); Keith Jarrett (piano); Cecil McBee, Ron McClure (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums).

In 1966 Lloyd formed a quartet with pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, These four performers had been together for only a year when they performed together in Monterey. Additionally, Each man was at the start of their careers and you would not have known by the reaction of their audience. This remarkable release is a testament to this four man wonder group flooring their audience.

Tracks:
1. Forest Flower—Sunrise
2. Forest Flower—Sunset
3. Sorcery
4. Song of Her
5. East of the Sun
6. Sombrero Sam

Herb Ellis Biography
Encyclopedia of Popular Music

Herb Ellis b. Mitchell Herbert Ellis, 4 August 1921, Farmersville, Texas, USA. In 1941 Ellis attended North Texas State College, where his fellow students included Jimmy Giuffre. After graduation, he played guitar in a number of big bands, including the Casa Loma Orchestra and the Jimmy Dorsey outfit. He was next with Soft Winds, a trio formed from the Dorsey rhythm section with Johnny Frigo and Lou Carter, and in 1953 took Barney Kessel's place in the Oscar Peterson trio, where he remained for five years alongside Ray Brown. After leaving Peterson he accompanied Ella Fitzgerald for four years and also worked with Julie London, then spent a decade in the Los Angeles film and television studios. In the early 70s he began a succession of marvellous associations with other guitarists, including Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd and Kessel (with the latter two as the Great Guitars). In his playing, Ellis constantly reveals a deep affinity for the blues and reflects a thorough awareness of the work of Charlie Christian. As a section player he brings an earthy quality few of his peers can match, and his time with Peterson was of such a high standard that thereafter the pianist rarely used another guitarist. As a soloist his command is outstanding and the bluesy muscularity of his playing is a constant source of delight.
