Dave Holland Quintet Touring in support of Dave Holland's new cd, Not For Nothin', the Dave Holland Quintet made a stop at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater in Las Vegas. The Quintet includes leader Dave Holland on bass, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and drummer Nate Smith. Eubanks and Potter occasionally front their own bands when not touring with others.

Starting their show with "Not For Nothin'", the Dave Holland Quintet tried in vain to be a cohesive unit. The Quintet seemed to be pulling itself in four different directions, bass, drums, vibraphone, and horns. Like the next song, "The Balance," the balance of the band wasn't there for this show. "Go Fly A Kite" was the next song, and I'm disappointed I didn't get the hint. The songs "Make Believe" and "Prime Directive" showed the night's only real promise. Individually, the stars of this band were the horn section. Chris Potter and Robin Eubanks single-handedly kept this show from self destructing. An encore of "Dream Of The Elders" gratefully put this show to bed.
