John Mayall: 70th Birthday Concert (RED Distribution, 2004)
A live two and a half hour concert with Bluesbreakers both past and present. Bluesbreakers of old include Eric Clapton who was with the band at journey's beginning - over 40 years ago - and Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, Mayall's lead guitarist from the sixties and eighties. Friend, and guest, trombonist Chris Barber fills in nicely with horn charts put together by ex-Bluesbreaker trumpet player Henry Lowther. For those of you who have a foggy notion of the fifties and sixties - due to either age or otherwise! - Barber was one of the pioneers of the British Blues movement. At his own expense he brought over to England some of the greatest American blues artists. The entire set abounds with great guitar solos by both Clapton and Taylor. Clapton also sings several tunes. Current Bluesbreaker Buddy Whittington more than holds his own with superb solos on "Blues For The Lost Days" and the 17-minute "Have You Heard." This is a must have DVD/CD for all John Mayall (Eric Clapton/Mick Taylor) fans - and a great starter disc for first time listeners. -- R.J. Bianchino, Blues Internet
