Greg Piccolo & Heavy Juice made their yearly trip to the Railhead at Boulder Station. The band features Greg on vocals, sax and guitar, Shinichi Otsu on keyboards, and drummer Phil Leo.
The band opened the evening with the instrumental "MUSH MOUTH", which Greg added some fine sax work to. The next two songs, "ACID BLUE" and "KIDNEY STEW" had Greg switching back and forth between sax and guitar.
Greg played the next song, "YOU LEFT ME ALL ALONE", for Illinois Jacquet, his favorite sax player. The Earl King tune "OLD MR. BAD LUCK" went into "SUGAR RAY", then concert staples "YES INDEED" and "WHAT WOULD I DO WITHOUT YOU" followed. The instrumental number "BLOW JOE BLOW" is a rocking blues song featuring great sax work from Greg Piccolo and a nice solo from keyboardist Otsu. "RED LIGHTS" and "ALIMONY BLUES" and a BB King riff that featured the band's introductions ended the first set.
The band opened the second set with "ALL NIGHT LONG", then went into "FIRST TIME". The highlight of the evening was an inspired instrumental version of "OVER THE RAINBOW" that brought the house down.
"ROCKING CHAIR", a fine song that you can always count on, lead into "PLEASE DON'T LEAVE", which featured a fifties sound. The instrumental "BIG BOSS MAN" featured another great keyboard workout from Shinichi. "BOLO BLUES" lead into "KEEP ON TRYING", before the last song, "DON'T CRY TO ME" ended a beautiful night of music.
