Like the Neal family from Baton Rouge LA, the Kinseys from Gary IN are another great blues family. It was special when the Kinsey Report played the Railhead at Boulder Station for the first time. The Kinsey Report are Donald, vocals and guitar, Ralph, drums and vocals, and Kenny Kinsey, bass. Guitarist Nick Byrd rounds out this quartet.
The band opened the show with an instrumental that showed the immense talent of this band. Their surprising set list included Percy Mayfield's "THE RIVER'S INVITATION", and a funky re-worked version of Bob Seger's "FIRE DOWN BELOW" that was so different that it took some time before I recognized it. "HOWLIN' WOLF" featured Donald Kinsey's fine slide work. Bob Marley's "STIR IT UP" was well done, and I never knew Donald played with the late great reggae king. This song also kept the crowd dancing. "SO MEAN TO ME" kept the crowd sticking around to see what would happpen next.
The Kinsey Report opened the second set with "WALKING CANE BLUES", which featured Nick Byrd and Donald Kinsey trading lead runs. The band also played two songs from the SMOKE AND STEEL CD back to back. "WHEN THE CHURCH BURNED DOWN" showed that we still live in very troubled times, and "TIME IS RUNNING OUT" is a good song on the CD, but so much better live.
Donald said that they would play a requested song they hadn't played in awhile. He didn't have to worry, "FULL MOON ON MAIN STREET" was given a big round of applause form the crowd. The last song of the set was Rufus Thomas' "WALKING THE DOG", featuring Ralph Kinsey on vocals and drums. The crowd made enough noise to bring them back for an encore. "GET UP, STAND UP", another Bob Marley song, featured a jam to show off the band's inexhaustible talents. This was the first time alot of these fans had the chance to see the Kinsey Report live. You can be sure it won't be the last. Report card grade - Blues kinship par excellence!
