Being a player since the early eighties, Debbie Davies even had a three year stint - 1988 to 1991 - as featured guitarists for Albert Collins and the Icebreakers. Of that tenue she says "It's really pushed me a lot because he [Collins] just wants you to put it all into your solo every time you play -- just like he does." In September of '91 Davies formed her own band and push it she did.
Currently Debbie is taking a trio on the road. What makes this band different isn't just the fact it's led by a female guitarist. The band is unique because all three members write songs. Like drummer Don Castagno's "I Can't Afford Myself", which he also sings. Then there's bass player A.J. Hagar's "Funky Little Teapot". Most stars wouldn't even think of using other band member songs.
Other selections included "A.C. Strut", a number dedicated to the late bluesman Albert Collins. They also played "I Get The Blues So Easy" and the much requested "Picture This" from the debut CD released in 1993 on Blind Pig Records. Tonight, Debbie's guitar work was fabulous and her rhythm section first rate. This second set at Boulder Station easily demonstated that not only does Debbie Davies love the game, she knows how to play.
Love The Game is Debbie Davies' new CD. Released in March 2001, it is her third for Shanachie Records. Produced by Duke Robillard.
At this time I'd like to give a big thank you to everyone who helps make the Railhead a great place to hear the blues. Special kudos go out to Bill "Senior" Johnson for lights, soundman Ben Labrador, and room manager Bob Formica.
